Community Wind

Community wind projects can take many forms, but experts generally agree on the following factors to define a community wind project:

• Significant, direct local ownership stake that goes above and beyond leases and tax benefits.  Project ownership can consist of farmers, local residents, schools universities or  municipalities.
• Turbine size is utility scale (larger than 100 kW), and the total project is is often 20 MW or lower. 
• Are interconnected to either provide electricity to the customer or to send electricity to the grid. 

Studies have shown that community wind projects, while only 2% of the total wind projects in the U.S., can contribute far more to the local economy than wind projects owned by outside investors.
